Little did Dr. Masdon know that he would be a patient himself, after he developed his own OSA symptoms. Dr. Masdon used a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine first, but he started getting headaches and couldn’t tolerate the treatment.
This is when he realized Inspire® therapy might be for him. He was implanted in November 2022, becoming the first Inspire-trained doctor who is also an Inspire patient. He said he’s happy with his decision and is impressed by the high success rates for both him and his patients, which was one of the main reasons he considered Inspire as an option.
Inspire reduced the AHI (apnea-hypopnea index) to nearly zero for several of Dr. Masdon’s patients. Dr. Masdon has been treating patients with OSA for over 20 years, and he became an Inspire-trained doctor over three years ago, becoming one of the first three doctors in Alabama to begin offering Inspire, joining Dr. Kirk Withrow (over 300 Inspire procedures) and Dr. William Blythe.
Dr. Masdon has now done over 115 Inspire procedures, including one of his best friends Tim McNair. The experience allowed Dr. Masdon to know the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea, but it was still a surprise that he would soon become a patient himself.
Dr. Masdon first realized he may be dealing with sleep apnea after his wife complained about his snoring.
He received a pillar implant after not tolerating CPAP. This implant is used to treat snoring and mild cases of sleep apnea. It helped at first, but Masdon still lacked energy throughout the day.
He went in for a sleep study and was surprised to learn he was dealing with severe OSA, not a mild case as expected.
Dr. Masdon said he took good care of himself, and he believed the lack of energy he felt was just due to his age, as he was now older than 50.
Masdon then turned to Dr. Withrow. Dr Withrow and Masdon are friends. They also had their residency training together, and Dr. Withrow was the first in Alabama to offer the Inspire implant.
And now Dr. Masdon can be his own Inspire therapy success story.
“I definitely am looking to get some deep sleep,” Dr. Masdon said
